Rant #1
“I never thought I would have to deal with a stereotype like this one…. A woman we approached for honest and critical feedback in the early stages of our research process said she thought that the woman pictured in the (stereotype) stickers did not look dark enough to look like a “colored” woman.
Yes she did. She did say this!
And you know that I flipped. I was offended, first of all, because it too a very long and hot 7 seven days of sun in Virginia to get my skin that dark (I am the one on the sticker)….and second of all I AM a womyn of color and for someone to think otherwise is upsetting to me. It wasn’t until later that I realized this womyn had just fed into a stereotype. She as expecting a dark skinned or a Black womyn to represent what a colored womyn is! Let me explain something to you guys and the rest of the world… A colored person is anyone who is not considered White or Caucasian. You may be Asian, South American, Latino and any other race…”
